Naira Marley, ASUU Strike – Google’s Top Searches Of 2019 In Nigeria Shows Some Crazy Stuff

By  |  December 11, 2019

With the year 2019 only a couple of weeks away from becoming history, Google has revealed the top searches of 2019 in Nigeria.

The announcement of the results of Google’s 2019 Year in Search offered an interesting perspective on the “big” moments from the year 2019 and top trends based on searches conducted in Nigeria.

And as would be expected, there were some rather interesting discoveries. This year’s top trending news search is ‘ASUU Strike’, which took the highest place over other trending news topics like ‘AFCON 2019’, ‘Naira Marley’ and ‘Women’s World Cup 2019’.

Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley — a Nigerian musician who is fast-attaining cult hero status due to his connection with the Nigerian youth — leads the list as the most searched person.

Naira Marley topped Atiku Abubakar (Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party at the 2019 Nigerian general election), and Brazillian professional footballer, Neymar, as the most-google-searched person in Nigeria. However, Neymar made the lists as the top trending sports person searched by Nigerians in 2019.

The Nigerian movie industry, better known as Nollywood, is famous for being one of the largest in the world, at least, by the sheer volume of content put out annually.

And interestingly, the most-searched actor in Nigeria in 2019 was not Genevieve Nnaji (the actor whose movie ‘Lionheart’ was nominated for an Oscar before being controversially disqualified.) The most-searched actor in Nigeria in 2019 is Regina Daniels.

Regina Daniels was the most searched actor, ranking over other actors like Genevieve Nnaji, Tonto Dikeh, and Hadiza Gabon among others.

The Nigerian music industry ranks No.1 in Africa and “Afrobeat” has particularly taken the world by storm in 2019. While the year 2019 has no doubt been the year of Grammy-nominee, Damini Ogulu (better known as Burna Boy), Wizkid’s ”Joro” was the most searched song in Nigeria this year.

Meanwhile, the most searched question in Nigeria this year is ‘what is xenophobia’.
