Pawame, a solar energy startup that aims to serve off-grid communities in Sub-Saharan African countries, has secured USD 1.7 Mn in grants. This is in addition to USD 750 K in equity funding, including USD 250 K from the Launch Africa Fund.
Pawame offers its customers in Kenya a pay-as-you-go subscription model for its home systems. It also enables them to obtain micro-loans via their mobile phones so that they can afford the solar home systems.
The startup intends to use the newly raised cash to speed the development of its new products, which include solar-powered water pumps and refrigerators that aim to enhance people’s access to a regular water supply.
