Kenya-based Internet Service Provider (ISP) Mawingu has announced the acquisition of Arusha-based ISP Habari, which operates across seven regions in Tanzania. The acquisition is expected to accelerate Mawingu’s mission of enhancing digital connectivity in the underserved areas of East Africa, addressing challenges like high capital costs and logistical complexities.
Mawingu has raised USD 15 M in debt and equity financing to support its expansion. This includes USD 4 M from existing investors InfraCo Africa (part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group) and Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank FMO, and USD 11 million in long-term senior debt from the Africa Go Green Fund (AGG), managed by Cygnum Capital.
The acquisition of Habari will enable Mawingu to replicate its successes in Kenya by scaling its affordable home Internet solutions to underserved communities across East Africa. Mawingu aims to grow its presence in key markets by acquiring and expanding local ISPs, reinforcing its commitment to bridging the digital divide in the region.
