Rwanda-based cleantech startup Biomassters has raised an undisclosed funding round from Acumen to expand its operations and enhance access to clean cooking solutions. Founded in 2020 by Claudia Muench and Jan de Graaf, Biomassters is headquartered in Kigali and established a UK subsidiary in 2022.
Biomassters focuses on replacing traditional charcoal production and cooking with modern, low-carbon pellet fuel solutions. The startup uses waste materials to produce pellet fuel, targeting urban and peri-urban households in Rwanda and beyond. Its mission is to provide affordable, environmentally friendly cooking solutions that contribute to reducing carbon emissions and deforestation.
Acumen’s investment will enable Biomassters to construct a new fuel production facility to increase capacity, expand its stove distribution network, and grow its network of retail shops. These efforts aim to provide clean cooking solutions to 25,000 households and small businesses, improving access to sustainable alternatives to charcoal.
This funding aligns with Biomassters’ vision to develop a low-carbon cooking value chain in Africa, paving the way for broader adoption of modern and sustainable cooking technologies.
