South Africa’s Trade Shield Secures USD 824 K For AI-Powered Credit Risk Platform

Trade Shield, a Johannesburg-based credit risk management startup, has raised ZAR 15 M (~USD 824 K) from FNB’s Vumela Enterprise Development Fund in partnership with Edge Growth. The funding will support Trade Shield’s expansion in South Africa and international markets, reinforcing its role as a SaaS-driven solution for managing trade credit risk.

Launched in 2023 as a spin-off from Inoxico, a Vumela-backed credit bureau, Trade Shield offers an AI-powered platform that helps businesses automate credit risk assessments through real-time data collection, predictive modeling, and analytics. By providing subscription-based access to risk insights, the platform enables companies to extend credit responsibly, improve cash flow, and boost revenue while maintaining stable debt ratios.

Trade Shield operates alongside Inoxico, which continues to offer pay-per-use and retainer-based credit risk services. The startup employs around 45 specialists, including data scientists, software developers, and trade credit experts, to refine its technology and enhance its offerings.

The investment underscores Vumela’s commitment to supporting black-owned SMEs and fostering economic growth through accessible trade finance solutions. Trade Shield Chairman André Stürmer praised Vumela’s continued support, highlighting its deep market expertise and belief in the startup’s innovation.

According to Edge Growth Associate Principal Sally Kitley, Trade Shield’s unique approach to trade credit management is gaining traction in a market with strong demand, while FNB Vumela Trustee Mike Sage emphasised the importance of trade credit as a driver of economic growth.

With this funding, Trade Shield aims to scale its operations, enhance AI capabilities, and expand into new markets, solidifying its position as a leader in credit risk management solutions.
