SA’s The Invigilator Raises USD 11 M To Expand AI Anti-Cheating Edtech Globally

South African edtech startup The Invigilator has raised USD 11 M in funding to scale its AI-powered assessment monitoring software worldwide. The round was led by Kaltroco, a Channel Islands–based family-backed investment firm.

Founded in 2020, The Invigilator helps schools and universities curb cheating during remote exams. Its platform uses students’ smartphones to monitor activity and leverages AI to flag suspicious behaviour, all designed to work in low-bandwidth environments. More than 100 institutions in Southern Africa already use the tool, including Varsity College and Curro Academy.

Earlier this year, the startup rolled out a new feature that builds a unique “writing profile” for each student, enabling it to detect AI-generated text in assignments. CEO Nicholas Riemer said the fresh capital will allow the company to “ramp up AI development” and pursue live AI monitoring, multilingual support, and international expansion across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
