Ampersand, the Rwandan-Kenyan startup leading Africa’s electric motorcycle revolution, has secured new funding to supercharge its growth. The round brought in fresh capital from British International Investment (BII), alongside Seedstars Africa Ventures, Gaia Impact, Rwanda Green Fund, Raspberry Syndicate, and existing backers like Acumen, TotalEnergies, and AHL Ventures.
The funding will help Ampersand scale its electric motorcycle fleet to 13,000 and double its battery swap network by early 2026. Already powering over 6,000 bikes and delivering more than 20,000 battery swaps daily, Ampersand is cutting fuel costs for drivers while slashing emissions.
“This funding marks a powerful vote of confidence in our mission to electrify Africa’s most important form of transport,” said CEO Josh Whale.
With fuel subsidies shrinking and motorcycle taxis making up a USD 25 B fuel market, Ampersand’s affordable, scalable solution is positioning it as a key player in Africa’s clean mobility shift.
