France’s Proparco has invested in Nairobi-based electric bus startup BasiGo, backing its expansion across Kenya and Rwanda as Africa’s e-mobility race intensifies. While the investment size wasn’t disclosed, the capital will help the company scale local assembly, grow charging infrastructure, and accelerate its “Road to 1000” electric buses.
Founded in 2021, BasiGo already has 100 e-buses operating in Nairobi and Kigali, which have transported over nine million passengers and covered more than 1.4 million kilometres. The company also secured a USD 42 M Series A last year.
Its model, which involves assembling buses locally and financing operators through a pay-as-you-drive system, has positioned it as one of the continent’s fastest-scaling clean transport startups.
