Air Transport connection between Jamaica and Kenya is set to be boosted after President Uhuru Kenyatta discussed the issue with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness during his three-day official visit to the Caribbean nation.

President Kenyatta said that the country is keen to introduce flights from the East Coast to the West Coast of Africa and directly to Jamaica, and through Jamaica to the rest of the Caribbean.

“Our national carrier now has scheduled direct flights from Nairobi to New York but we would like to see flights flying from the East Coast to the West Coast of Africa and directly to Jamaica, and through Jamaica to the rest of the Caribbean as a true way of deepening our partnership,” President Uhuru said.

The direct flights to Jamaica are expected to increase economic interaction and subsequently deepen the partnership between the two countries and also between Caribbean countries and the African continent.

“We need to deepen our trade because by so doing we also take our people-to-people relations to the next level. Kenya is today one of the largest and one of the most diversified economies on the African continent,” Mr Kenyatta said.

In 2018, Kenya also launched direct flights between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York City in a move that is seen to strengthen Nairobi as a Hub for Africa

During his visit to Jamaica, Kenyatta also held talks on how to boost cooperation in the blue economy sector which he said has great potential for creating jobs.

Eventually, they signed four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on technical cooperation in tourism and in the fields of sports, on a framework of cooperation between the two governments and an MoU on political consultations.
