Roam Electric, Mogo Kenya and BasiGo have each received USD 10 M in debt from the US government to support the design and development of electric motorcycles and buses as well as charging stations for motorcycles and buses throughout Kenya.
The USD 30 M was part of the more than USD 250 M new DFC financing package announced during President Ruto’s visit to Washington, D.C. This package includes multimillion-dollar investments in various critical projects in Kenya, such as affordable student housing in Nairobi, nationwide digital connectivity, and advancements in e-mobility and renewable energy. These initiatives build on DFC’s ongoing support in the country.
Roam is a leading provider of locally designed and manufactured electric vehicles, including motorcycles, mass transit buses, urban transit buses, and charging systems. Their goal is to create reliable, affordable products for the African market. BasiGo offers modern electric buses and charging/maintenance services to bus operators. Their innovative financing model makes these buses more accessible, allowing operators to pay for the battery and charging separately through a pay-as-you-go plan. Mogo Kenya collaborates with electric motorbike suppliers (Stima, Gecss) and ride-hailing companies (Bolt, Jumia) to promote eco-friendly e-mobility in the country, reducing carbon emissions and noise pollution.
