Mawingu, a Kenyan internet service provider (ISP) focused on underserved communities, has raised USD 20 M in Series C funding led by Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Managers.
Founded in 2012, Mawingu delivers affordable connectivity to rural and peri-urban areas using solar-powered wireless technology. The new capital will accelerate its network rollout in Kenya, advancing its mission to connect one million East Africans by 2028. The ISP currently serves more than 120,000 people.
CEO Farouk Ramji called the raise a validation of Mawingu’s business model during a difficult funding climate, emphasising its dual focus on impact and financial sustainability.
The round builds on Mawingu’s 2024 expansion into Tanzania, where it acquired long-standing ISP Habari through a USD 15 M debt-and-equity deal backed by AGG, InfraCo Africa, and FMO. With this Series C, Mawingu is poised to consolidate its Kenyan presence while laying the groundwork for broader East African growth.
