Uganda’s Sawa Energy Raises USD 2.9 M To Scale Solar Power In East Africa

Ugandan renewable energy firm Sawa Energy has raised EUR 2.5 M (USD 2.9 M) in equity investment from the EU-funded ElectriFI initiative to scale solar and energy storage solutions for businesses in Uganda and Rwanda.

Founded in 2021, Sawa Energy provides fully-financed solar PV and battery systems to commercial and industrial clients through long-term contracts at discounted rates compared to grid tariffs. The model aims to replace diesel generators with cleaner, cost-effective alternatives.

ElectriFI’s investment, channelled through its Uganda Country Window, is expected to unlock additional institutional capital and accelerate the rollout of renewable systems across the region.

CEO Samuel Kaufman said the partnership will help Sawa “reduce emissions, lower costs, and improve productivity” for East African businesses, while EDFI Management Company described the deal as a step toward “phasing out polluting diesel power” in the region.
