Six African startups have won a combined USD 400 K in catalytic funding through the 2026 FINCA Ventures Prize Competition, which attracted more than 700 applications across fintech and sustainable agriculture.
Kenya-based VunaPay and Kumbatia Seafood took first place in their respective categories, receiving USD 100 K each.
VunaPay, co-founded by Gatwiri Njogu-Mokaya and Koya Matsuno, builds payment and credit infrastructure for smallholder farmers through agricultural cooperatives. Kumbatia Seafood, founded by Bernard Iha Thoya, Will Gertler and Nelson Ondego Mumata, finances and distributes sustainably caught fish from Kenya’s Swahili Coast.
Kenyan startups nesti and Pollen Patrollers won USD 60 K and USD 40 K respectively, while Rwanda/Zimbabwe-based ChatCash and Zimbabwe’s eAgro also secured funding. The awards are designed to help early-stage founders scale solutions serving underserved African communities.
