Over 2 Million Angolans To Benefit From Electrification Project
Access to electricity in Angola was reported at 40.52 percent in 2016, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators. The current electricity access in urban areas is over 70 percent while in the rural parts it is about 16 percent.
Angolan government aims to increase generation capacity to 9,900 megawatts by 2025 and achieve a national electrification rate of 60 percent. In an attempt to Increase electric power availability as well as diversify the economy and meet the increasing energy demand, the government earlier instituted an ambitious infrastructure plan.
The Southern African nations have continued to make strides towards improving electricity access. An Initiative Funded by China Credit Line (LCC) will see over 2 million Angolans benefit from a major electrification project christened Ciang 5
The National Electricity Distribution Company (ENDE) confirmed the project adding that it foresees boosting the Industry sector and other service delivery areas.
The project covers the municipalities of Luanda, Viana, Belas, Kilamba Kiaxi, Talatona, Cazenga, Icolo and Bengo, and Cacuaco.
The project which was launched in 2016 aims to increase the electrification rate of localities by supplying and building new substations.
Reports indicate that the installation of the last four Transformation Posts (PTs) are in their final phase. Once the project is completed, it will improve the distribution capacity of Luanda province and more homes will have access to electricity.
