ChitChat Teams Up with Mastercard to Launch Virtual Debit Cards

Zambian social commerce platform ChitChat in partnership with payment technology company, Mastercard, is rolling out virtual debit cards that will allow its users to perform a wide range of transactions—all within the ChitChat app.

This includes everything from online shopping and managing subscription payments to transferring funds across borders in real-time.

The virtual debit card will be embedded into the ChitChat app’s interactive chat functionality, allowing users to discuss expenses and immediately transfer funds without leaving the conversation.

The chats and payments platform developed by Union54 stated that this integration is expected to accelerate cross-border payments, eliminate the need for traditional banking processes, and offer multi-currency support to protect against local currency fluctuations.

The goal is to create a one-stop shop for financial transactions, merging social interaction with financial services in a way that will streamline the user experience.

“We are thrilled to partner with Mastercard to launch the ChitChat virtual debit card, a tool that will redefine how individuals and businesses in Africa interact with money and access global services,” said Perseus Mlambo, CEO of ChitChat.

Perseus emphasized that “By integrating local economies with the global market in a secure and convenient chat platform, we empower our users with instant transactions that transform everyday interactions and unlock new economic opportunities across the continent.”

This partnership is part of a broader initiative by Mastercard to build a more inclusive digital economy across Africa. As Gabriel Swanepoel, Country Manager at Mastercard, noted, the company is committed to “building the African domestic payment ecosystem connecting partners through digital solutions and technology, extending acceptance infrastructure, and aiming to connect one billion people to the digital economy by 2025.”

The card technology company noted that the partnership with ChitChat is a key step toward that goal, offering a versatile payment solution that could enhance operational efficiency and support Africa’s transition into digital commerce.

Overall, this partnership has the potential to position ChitChat as more than just a social platform. By offering financial services, ChitChat is expected to become a comprehensive tool that meets both social and financial needs, empowering its users with instant access to global markets.
