International cross-border bank Standard Chartered, in collaboration with WomHub, has announced the second edition of the Women in Tech (WiT) Incubator Programme in South Africa.
This initiative aims to support female-led and founded businesses, empower women entrepreneurs in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Manufacturing) industries, and foster a more inclusive and innovative tech ecosystem.
According to the announcement, the programme is designed to cultivate a supportive environment that could help women overcome barriers and thrive in their ventures.
Starting in September 2024, the 12-week programme will select 15 startups through a rigorous vetting process. Participants will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that includes mentorship, practical training, and networking opportunities.
Selected startups will engage in focused sessions aimed at developing personal growth and leadership skills, potentially empowering them to lead their ventures successfully. The programme is expected to offer a range of resources, including mentorship, practical training, networking opportunities, access to funding, and a supportive community of like-minded individuals.
At the end of the programme, five standout startups are anticipated to receive USD 10 K each in non-dilutive seed funding to support their development. Additionally, the finalists will benefit from individual mentoring and financial coaching over a three-month period, providing personalized guidance and support.
The partnership says it aims to build on the success of its inaugural program in 2023, which featured startups in fintech, healthtech, property tech, and edutainment. It highlighted the achievements of eFama, a participant from the first cohort that expanded its market reach and empowered farmers across South Africa with the programme’s support.
Apart from the South African edition, Standard Chartered runs similar Women in Tech Incubator Programmes in other African countries, including Nigeria and Kenya, offering up to USD 200 K in seed funding for participating businesses.
