Ethiopian Online Marketplace Qefira Shuts Down Following Acquisition

By  |  June 15, 2023

Qefira, a well-known online marketplace in Ethiopia, has discontinued its services as its recent owners opted to close down the platform. Qefira, which was established close to ten years ago, was managed by Ringier One Africa Media (ROAM), a company that operated various online marketplaces throughout Africa. In addition to Qefira, ROAM oversaw platforms such as pigiame in Kenya and Expat-Dakar in Ghana. These marketplaces provided avenues for business-to-consumer (B2C) and consumer-to-consumer (C2C) advertising, as well as opportunities for branding through listings.

Qefira operated as a marketplace, serving as a connecting platform for buyers and sellers. It facilitated their interaction but did not offer online payment or delivery services. The responsibility for these tasks was left to the involved parties, while Qefira generated revenue through advertisements on the platform. Users had the opportunity to buy and sell various items, including real estate properties and cosmetics, which were categorized into 11 different categories.
