First, it is important to note that there are a lot of things that can lead to cart abandonment. Some people sincerely forget about the cart, some get distracted, some were just browsing through, some just want to window-shop online, some aren’t just ready, some don’t even have the money yet.

Here are effective ways you can reduce cart abandonment:

  1. Think safety: As an e-commerce business owner, you need to invest in tools and resources that would make your customers trust your platform and feel more comfortable shopping from you. Ensure that your website is secured and make it visible to your customers that they are shopping from a secured platform. You can do this by using security logos and displaying them prominently on your website.
  2. Multiple payment gateway: give your customers as many payment options as possible so it would be easy for them to make a purchase decision on your website. E.g. people can pay via bank transfer, credit card payment, Paypal, etc.
  3. Be clear about payments: How much is the shipping and are there additional costs? What is the tax cost and what other costs do shoppers need to be aware of? Be clear about all of these and don’t catch your customers unawares.
  4. Invest in great copywriting: The type of words you use on your website can affect the way your customers respond to your sales offer. Your copy is a great way to lure your customers to buy from you.
  5. Improve your purchase process: First, you need to ensure you improve your user experience. Make navigations easy and ensure things work well whether on a mobile version or a desktop version. Don’t forget that some shoppers prefer to shop from their smartphones. In addition, one of the ways you can improve your purchase process is by including the images or thumbnails of the products the customer is purchasing. This helps to reiterate what they are buying and it instills some form of trust in them and also helps to remove distractions.
  6. Offer Assurances: You should, at different points in time offer assurances concerning the purchases. Talk about quality, money-back guarantee, standard, etc. The idea is to reinforce it in the minds of your customers that they are a make a wise purchase decision.
  7. Optimize your website: If your website is too slow to load or too difficult to navigate, then there is the possibility that customers may get frustrated and abandon their carts right in the middle of their purchase. It can also make them worry about the credibility of your business.
  8. Send emails: You can simply send out reminder emails to customers who have abandoned their carts. This is simply because some of them actually forgot about the cart.
  9. Offer discounts: When you offer discounts or coupons to customers, they may be more motivated to continue with their purchase because they would realise they are saving money and they can get much more with their money.
  10. Be patient: Sometimes, some customers do actually come back to their carts. And so, while you employ all of the above tips, remember to be patient and not come off desperate.
