More Than 500 People To Be Rendered Jobless Following Airtel-Telkom Merger
Telkom Kenya has announced its plans to sack about 575 of its employees following its merger with telecom company Airtel.
“We intend to terminate the employment of approximately 575 of our employees, on account of redundancy, as a result of the transaction,” Telkom CEO Mugo Kibati said.
The communication company issued a one-month notice to its staff, notifying them of its plans to lay off 575 people. The brief noted that the move was to clear way as the two firms finalise on their agreement.
“In accordance with the provisions of employment act, we have notified communications workers union and sent out letters to individuals affected giving one month’s notice with effect from July 31,” Kibati said.
The notice period will give a chance for consultation between the company and the staff.
As for those people whose jobs have not been tampered with by the changes, they will continue serving as employees. Worthy to note also, the CEO pointed out that some sacked employees may be offered jobs on conditions that their positions will be available and whether they meet the recruitment criteria.
The much-awaited merger is expected to be concluded before the end of this year.
Safaricom’s has overshadowed the two of its major rivals who have struggled to remain afloat having dominated Kenya’s telecom scene.
