There Is A Ranking For The Most Generous Nations & This African Country Is No.1 In The World

For the past 10 years, Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has kept tabs on charitable behaviour around the globe in a series of studies that have surveyed more than 1.3 million people to find out how they give.

This endeavour forms the basis of something called the  World Giving Index, an annual ranking of the generosity of people across the globe.

Taking a cue from the findings, Liberia has been named number one in the world when it comes to helping strangers.

Helping strangers is one of the three criteria the UK-based CAF used to fashion out the overall index of generosity. The two other parts of the criteria consider how much money people donate to charity and how much time people give to volunteering.

In the overall rankings, Kenya was ranked the most generous country in Africa and the 11th most generous in the world. Liberia was listed as 17th, Sierra Leone 20th, and Nigeria 22nd.

But where Africa truly shone is in criteria that looks at people who do the most when it comes to helping strangers. In this category, seven African countries made the top 10 globally.

Liberia ranked number one globally in helping strangers. Also, there were six other African countries that placed highly in that regard: Sierra Leone (second), Kenya (fourth), Zambia (fifth), Uganda (sixth), Nigeria (seventh) and Malawi (joint 10th).

The CAF World Giving Index 10th Edition provides a decade’s worth of combined insight into the scope and nature of giving around the world.

Sir John Low, Chief Executive, CAF, says:

“In taking a step back and looking at giving trends over 10 years, we have created what we hope will serve as a roadmap to continue to grow giving in all its forms across the globe. There are areas of concern, but also key moments of hope in parts of the world that have overcome true hardship.”

The research also found that, around the globe, 2.5 billion people have helped a stranger in the past 10 years. In addition, Globally, nearly one-fifth of all adults volunteer. Also, half of the countries that have risen most in the CAF World Giving Index are from Asia.
